According to the Census Bureau, the homeownership rate for the third quarter was 66.9 percent, 0.7 percentage points lower than the year before and approximately the same as it was in the second quarter of 2010. The homeownership rate hit a peak of 69 percent in 2004, at the height of the housing boom. It is now at its lowest level since 1999, when it was 66.7 percent.
